Health officials in the state of South Australia (Australia) warn that weakened natural immunity in people has caused a spike in COVID-19 cases in this state.

According to data released by the state of South Australia on November 3, in the seven days to October 31, the state recorded four deaths and 1,691 new COVID-19 cases, an increase of 55% compared to 1,089 cases in the previous week and the highest number of new cases per week since early June.

South Australian health officials said the spike in new cases was a sign of a new wave of infections but not due to the BA.2.86 variant (also known as Pirola) first detected in Australia in September.

Currently, most new cases are infected with the XBB variant.

South Australian health officials predict the state will see a new outbreak within six months and say vaccine spacing remains the "key" to preventing large waves of the disease.

According to the latest figures, since the outbreak, the total number of COVID-19 cases in South Australia is 939,051 and the total number of deaths is 1,624.
