Storm and tropical depression activity is likely to be concentrated from September to November. Thus, with the La Nina scenario (a phenomenon in which the surface water layer in the equatorial Pacific Ocean cools abnormally) appearing from June onwards, storms will be concentrated in the later part of the year, with many storms forming in the East Sea and affecting the mainland more quickly.

From June 2024, heat waves will increase in intensity and gradually spread to other areas of the Northern region, the North Central region and the Central Central region. Heat waves and severe heat waves are likely to occur more frequently than the average of many years in July and August 2024, so be on guard for particularly severe heat waves. In the Northern region, heat waves tend to decrease gradually from the second half of August. In the Central region, heat waves tend to decrease gradually from September.

The Central region is likely to experience prolonged drought during the period from May to August 2024, concentrated in the provinces from Quang Tri to Binh Thuan.

Regarding the flood situation, Mr. Hoang Duc Cuong, Deputy Director General, General Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said that from July to September, heavy rains will appear in the North. From September to November, heavy rains will appear in the Central region. Localized heavy rains with high intensity from 50-100mm in 3-6 hours are likely to appear more in the coming time, taking precautions against the possibility of landslides and flash floods in mountainous areas, urban flooding. In particular, in the Central region, the possibility of being affected by the La Nina phenomenon may cause concentrated rains in the last months of 2024.

Regarding the flood situation, in the Northern River basin, the flood peak is generally at alert level 1-alarm level 2, higher than in 2023 and lower than the average of many years. Floods commonly occur in the period from July to September.

Flood peaks in the downstream of Ma River (Thanh Hoa), Ca River (Nghe An, Ha Tinh) are at alert level 1, alert level 2; downstream of main rivers from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa are at alert level 2, alert level 3. Rivers in Phu Yen, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan are above alert level 2.

The 2024 flood season on the Mekong River appears similar to the average of many years. The 2024 flood peak at the headwaters of the Mekong River fluctuates at alert level 1. The flood peak at the downstream stations of the Mekong River is at alert level 2, alert level 3 and above alert level 3.

In 2023, our country's weather and climate were affected by the El Nino phenomenon. There were 8 storms and tropical depressions, 25 cold spells, 20 widespread heat waves, and water shortages in the Northern region from January to July 2023, with a general shortage of 10-80% compared to the average of many years; 21 widespread heavy rains, 13 floods in the Northern, Central and Central Highlands regions. Floods, flash floods, and landslides occurred in 35 provinces in the midland and mountainous regions of the Northern, Central and Central Highlands provinces and cities.

From the beginning of 2024 until now, there have been 13 types of natural disasters nationwide including: Heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, hail, heat waves, drought, saltwater intrusion, forest fires, landslides, land subsidence...
