At least three people were killed and many others are believed to be missing in a coal mine collapse in the eastern state of West Bengal, Indian officials said on October 13.
Police sources said the incident occurred on the evening of October 11 at the Narayankuri coal mine in the Raniganj area of Paschim Bardhaman district, 197km northwest of the capital Kolkata.
At the time of the incident, miners were mining coal inside the mine and police believe that more than 20 people entered the illegal coal mine, some of whom managed to escape when the mine collapsed.
Those killed were identified as local residents, while many others are believed to be still trapped inside the mine.
Rescue forces quickly deployed operations to search for trapped people.
Local media say 10 people are missing.
