The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), Mr. Volker Turk expressed "horror" at the Israeli airstrikes and shelling in Gaza this morning.

Mr. Turk asserted that Israel's continued use of force would only exacerbate the suffering of Palestinians who were already enduring dire conditions.

The UN official stressed that the past 18 months of violence have clearly demonstrated that a military solution to the crisis is not possible. Only a political solution in accordance with international law can bring lasting peace. Mr. Turk called for the unconditional release of all hostages and arbitrarily detained individuals, and called on all relevant parties to take decisive action to ensure peace and prevent further suffering of civilians.

For her part, European Aid Commissioner Hadja Lahbib called for an immediate end to the renewed violence in Gaza. On social media X, Lahbib said: "The new escalation in Gaza is devastating. Civilians have suffered unimaginable pain. This must stop." She stressed: "There must be an immediate ceasefire."

Several countries have also expressed concern about the latest developments in Gaza. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said his country was "very concerned" after Israel resumed air strikes on the Gaza Strip and expressed little optimism about the possibility of a ceasefire being restored. "This not only disrupts the ceasefire, but also disrupts the path for all the hostages to return home," Crosetto told RTL 102.5 radio. Crossetto called for a ceasefire to be restored, and said Italy would work to make it happen.

On the same day, the Kremlin warned of a "spiral of escalation" in Gaza after Israel resumed air strikes on Gaza after a two-month ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented: "The situation is getting worse, another spiral of escalation, this is causing concern for us." Mr. Peskov also expressed concern about the casualties among Gazan civilians.

Meanwhile, Egypt, which brokered the ceasefire in Gaza along with Qatar and the United States, condemned the Israeli airstrikes, calling them a "flagrant violation" of the ceasefire that came into effect on January 19. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the airstrikes constituted "a dangerous escalation that threatens to have serious consequences for the stability of the region." It called on the international community to "take immediate action to stop Israel's actions against the Gaza Strip and prevent the region from entering a new cycle of violence and counter-violence."

Qatar also criticized Israel's airstrikes, while stressing the need to resume negotiations to implement the phases of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry also condemned “in the strongest terms” and called on the international community to step in to end what it described as “crimes against the Palestinian people”.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said many medical facilities in Gaza were "overwhelmed" after Israel resumed its heaviest air strikes on the Palestinian territory since the ceasefire was implemented. "What we heard from our colleagues in the Palestinian Crescent this morning is that many medical facilities are really overwhelmed across Gaza," spokesman Tommaso Della Longa told a press conference in Geneva.

The Brazilian government has condemned the violation of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In a joint statement following a meeting in Brasilia between Brazilian Foreign Minister Maria Laura da Rocha and Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, the two sides expressed concern about the fragility of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and condemned Israel's violations of the agreement, in particular the suspension of humanitarian aid and the power outage. The two countries agreed that a permanent ceasefire must be reached urgently, including the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory and the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners held in violation of international law.

Brazil and Palestine also stressed the need to establish a strong mechanism to ensure the access to humanitarian aid and expressed support for the Gaza recovery, reconstruction and development plan adopted by the League of Arab States on March 4. The Brazilian government affirmed its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination, based on the two-state solution, the joint statement said.
