After thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies exploded in Lebanon last week, causing many casualties, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has ordered all members to stop using all types of communication devices.
A senior IRGC security official said the force is conducting a large-scale operation to check all equipment, not just communications gear. He added that most of the equipment is either homemade or imported. The IRGC has also begun an investigation into mid- and high-ranking members of the force to guard against possible infiltration from outside. The investigation includes a close look at the bank accounts of the individuals both in Iran and abroad, as well as the travel histories of these individuals and their families.
Iran's Foreign, Defense and Interior Ministries have yet to comment on this information.
Earlier, on September 17-18, a series of explosions of communication equipment - including pagers and walkie-talkies - killed at least 39 people and injured more than 3,000 in Lebanon. The Lebanese government and the armed movement Hezbollah accused Israel of being behind the above attacks. However, Israel neither denied nor confirmed its involvement.
IRGC officials have contacted Hezbollah for technical evaluation following the communications equipment explosions and some of the explosive devices have been sent to Tehran for examination by experts.
