At the exact moment of the transition between the old year 2024 and the new year 2025, the crystal ball was dropped from the roof of the 25-story One Times building in Times Square in downtown New York City (USA).
The traditional New Year's Eve celebration with the Ball Drop event (also known as Countdown) took place at noon on January 1 (Vietnam time) in front of about 1 million people in the Square. The crystal ball weighs 12,000 pounds (more than 5 tons) and is made of 2,500 pieces of crystal.
As part of the program, artists performed vibrant acts, stirring up the atmosphere before the New Year's Eve moment in Times Square. This year, many famous artists participated in the Countdown Festival in Times Square, including TLC, Jonas Brothers, Rita Ora and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
The party, which took place across several blocks around the city's main tourist hub and stage, attracted thousands of attendees despite the cold, rainy weather. Las Vegas was no less glamorous, as the city bid farewell to 2024 with an eight-minute fireworks display on the Las Vegas Strip, witnessed by an estimated 340,000 people.
Since its first event in 1908, the image of the crystal ball being dropped from the roof of One Times Square building for 60 seconds, starting at 11:59, has become an iconic event in the "city that never sleeps" New York, marking the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year.
