Previously, in Tu Ky district, an average of 115 tons of unsorted waste was generated every day. All of it had to be collected and processed at landfills, leading to overload and environmental impacts.

Implementing the Campaign "Family of 5 yes, 3 clean" and the Project on Treating Household Waste, Reducing Rural Environmental Pollution in the period of 2021 - 2025 of the district, the Women's Union of Tu Ky district has registered a breakthrough work of classifying and treating organic waste at households.

In addition to promoting and encouraging people to classify waste at source, the District Women's Union also promotes the implementation of making probiotics to compost organic waste in households. "To classify and process organic waste, probiotics are required. Therefore, the association has trained and guided households to make probiotics themselves," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan, Chairwoman of the Tu Ky District Women's Union.

After being sorted, organic waste is put into a compost bin to be turned into fertilizer.

To date, 100% of the Women's Unions of communes and towns in Tu Ky district have implemented a model of waste classification and treatment using microorganisms at households. The model initially brought about a dual effect in helping to reduce the amount of household waste discharged into the environment, while also becoming a source of clean fertilizer for crops.

After being instructed, up to now, 5/9 Women's Unions of Ky Son commune have implemented the production of IMO probiotics, collecting more than 200 kg of native probiotics. Excited about this result, Ms. Pham Thi Tuoi, President of the Women's Union of Ky Son commune said: "The model has initially had positive economic effects, reducing the cost of buying chemical fertilizers for crops as before, bringing benefits to the environment. Using probiotics can treat the odor of household waste and livestock waste in ponds, gardens, barns, and farms. In the coming time, the Women's Union of the commune will guide all women's member families to apply this model."

Persistently change people's thinking

Organic waste after being fermented with IMO microorganisms becomes a source of fertilizer, helping plants grow well.

Up to now, in Tu Ky, about 60% of households have classified waste at source, the amount of waste discharged into the environment has decreased by 50 - 70% compared to before. Some communes have done well, achieving high rates such as: Quang Khai, Minh Duc, Tan Ky, Ha Ky... creating a clean lifestyle from home to the street. In these localities, there is active participation of the Women's Union in propagating and mobilizing to change people's actions and thinking.

Coming to Minh Duc commune these days, spring colors are everywhere on the clean and beautiful village roads. The small alleys are empty of organic waste. In every family, most have compost bins.

Quickly sprinkling yeast into two compost bins of organic waste in the garden, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen in Truc Van village said: “Now, going around the village and commune, I can no longer see large piles of garbage with dirty water like in the past. Organic waste is all classified and composted like this by the people. Any house with a garden, when fertilized with this fertilizer, the plants grow very well. Everything is very clean, clean from the house to the alley.”

Minh Duc Commune Women's Union has mobilized member families to build organic waste compost pits in their garden houses.

Minh Duc is currently one of the localities with a high rate of waste classification at source in Tu Ky district, with more than 95% of households implementing it. Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen, Chairwoman of the Minh Duc Commune Women's Union, shared that in 2023, when the commune implemented the district's directive on strengthening environmental protection, the Commune Women's Union established subcommittees to propagate and mobilize families to classify waste, build organic waste compost pits, and provide instructions on making IMO probiotics...

This not only requires people to change their habits but also invest money to build compost pits. At first, many women members were stubborn and did not want to change their habits, adding more trouble and wasting time in waste treatment. By persistently campaigning and demonstrating practical values from families who did well, the Commune Women's Union gradually succeeded in changing the thinking and actions of women.
