Appearing at a hearing before the US House Judiciary Committee on July 24, Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Christopher Wray revealed new details about Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who assassinated Republican candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania on July 13.

Mr. Wray said that through the recovery of Crooks' laptop, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation discovered that on July 6, that is, a week before the shooting in Butler (Pennsylvania), Crooks conducted an online search related to Lee Harvey Oswald, the shooter who assassinated US President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

That was also the day Crooks apparently registered for Donald Trump's campaign rally scheduled for July 13 in Butler County, Pennsylvania, Wray added.

Another new discovery, according to Mr. Wray, is that two hours before Mr. Trump spoke, Crooks flew an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the campaign area for about 11 minutes (from about 3:50 p.m. to 4 p.m. on July 13), about 182 meters away from the stage where Mr. Trump was scheduled to speak.

The drone and its controller were later found in the attacker's car along with two other "relatively crude" explosive devices.

In addition, the FBI Director noted that Crooks had become increasingly interested in government officials. In addition to Mr. Trump, Crooks also had photos of US President Joe Biden and several other prominent figures saved on his phone.

On the afternoon of July 13, local time, or the morning of July 14, Vietnam time, former US President Donald Trump was assassinated by Thomas Matthew Crooks while he was campaigning in Pennsylvania. The bullet passed through the upper part of Trump's ear and was not life-threatening.

Shortly thereafter, the subject was shot dead by a US Secret Service (USSS) sniper.

After the incident, US security forces have been working hard to "patch the loophole" in election security. USSS Director Kimberly A. Cheatle affirmed that the security situation has been enhanced and security plans for special national security events are designed flexibly.

Then on July 21, US officials said that the country's Secretary of Homeland Security, Mr. Alejandro Mayorkas, appointed an independent, bipartisan commission to review the assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13.

The committee, which includes members with extensive law enforcement and security experience, will conduct a 45-day independent review of the planning and actions of the Secret Service and state and local governments before, during and after former President Trump's campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, the day a gunman opened fire on Trump, the department said in a statement.

The committee also examined and evaluated the US Secret Service's implementation of plans and measures to ensure security for Mr. Trump during the above event.

The committee will initially include former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Frances Townsend, a former homeland security adviser to President George W. Bush, Mark Filip, a former federal judge and deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush, and David Mitchell, a former head of the Delaware homeland security agency. Additional experts may be added to the committee in the coming days.

The committee's joint statement affirmed that the establishment of this bipartisan group is to quickly identify security gaps so that the US Secret Service can further improve, to improve operational efficiency and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
