Pamukkale is formed from a sedimentary form deposited by hot springs containing calcium carbonate flowing over many years, creating pure white limestone stalactites layered with shells.
Pamukkale is located in the Menderes River Valley and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Türkiye. It is likened to a pure white cotton castle. The entrance fee is 25 lira/person (equivalent to 12 USD).
Stretching 2,700m on steep mountains, at first glance from afar many people easily mistake Pamukkale for a cold, white snow mountain. But no, this place is formed from a type of sediment deposited by hot springs containing a lot of calcium carbonate flowing over many years, creating pure white limestone stalactites layered with shells.
Since the 2nd century (BC) after discovering the mineral spring, the Romans came here to build Hierapolis (sacred city), and turned Pamukkale into a resort and medical treatment.
This is a fault line between tectonic plates, creating active volcanoes. Underground hot springs combined with carbonate gas erupt on the hilltop to form 17 streams, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 100 degrees Celsius.
Stepping foot on this giant “cotton” block, visitors will feel relaxed. The higher you go, the more poetic the beauty of Pamukkale becomes thanks to the warm sunlight.
Not only is it a place visited by many international tourist groups, the "cotton castle" also welcomes many young people and family groups to come and have fun on weekends.
Visitors to Pamukkale are advised to prepare bags for shoes, clothes, and hats because it is cool underfoot but hot above, even though the temperature is only 22-33 degrees Celsius.
The best time to visit the "cotton castle" is from April to June or September to late October.
In winter, the water level gradually decreases with very low temperatures, making it difficult for visitors to soak in the mineral water.
To reach Pamukkale, visitors should go to the city of Denizli (about 650km from Istanbul). You can travel by plane or bus.
The best time to depart from Istanbul is around 11am - 12am so that visitors can arrive the next morning. From Denizli bus station to Pamukkale is about 20km. Minibuses on standby here will take you straight to the "cotton castle".
