"Oppenheimer" received 8 Golden Globe nominations

According to Variety, the film is competing with many "heavyweight" opponents such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest and Past Lives in the category of Best Motion Picture - Drama. The film is also nominated in the categories of Outstanding Film Director, Outstanding Film Screenplay, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

The film earned Cillian Murphy a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama, Robert Downey Jr. a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Emily Blunt (Best Supporting Actress) and Ludwig Göransson (Best Original Score).

"Oppenheimer" cost $100 million to make and is considered by critics to be one of the best films of the year. The film, adapted from the biography American Prometheus, written by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, revolves around the life and work of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), who led the Manhattan Project to develop nuclear weapons.

According to statistics from international box office observer Box Office Mojo, "Oppenheimer" has the third highest revenue this year (over $950 million), behind Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (over $1.3 billion). It is also the third highest-selling film among Nolan's 12 works.

The film surpassed Saving Private Ryan (1998), directed by Steven Spielberg, to become the highest-grossing World War II film of all time, according to Variety. The R-rated film is the second-highest-grossing film of all time, behind Joker (2019).

In television, Succession (2018-2023) received nine nominations for its final season. In addition to Succession, the race for best drama will include 1923, The Crown, The Diplomat, The Last of Us and The Morning Show. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building - each with five nominations - will compete for best comedy with Abbott Elementary, Barry, Jury Duty and Ted Lasso.

This year, each category will feature six films, instead of five. The 2024 Golden Globes will introduce two new awards to honor box office hits and stand-up comedy performances.

The Golden Globes are run by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions (DCP), after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sold all assets, rights and ownership of the show in June. This year's event takes place on January 7 and will be broadcast live on CBS, the new broadcaster of the awards show.

Last year, The Fabelmans and The Banshees of Inisherin won two of the biggest film awards. In the acting categories, the organizers gave many trophies to multiracial actors. Most of the winners were of African and Asian descent instead of white actors. The two Asian stars of Everything Everywhere All at Once-Kwan Ke-hui and Michelle Yeoh - won their first Golden Globes. Their speeches were considered inspirational moments at this year's awards ceremony.
