According to Reuters, the Golden Globe Awards were sold to a new owner on June 12.
Golden Globe Awards on sale after series of HFPA scandals
Specifically, the press release said Eldridge Industries has acquired the Golden Globes along with Dick Clark Productions (DCP) - the company that will continue to manage the awards ceremony and expand its worldwide audience. DCP is co-owned by Eldridge and Penske Media.
After the two companies signed a cooperation agreement to acquire all assets and ownership, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) no longer has the right to organize and lead the award ceremony.
The move comes after the HFPA has been embroiled in controversy, particularly over the ethics of its members. A 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that there were no journalists of color on the HFPA. In addition, some members of the association have been accused of making sexist and racist comments or soliciting favors from celebrities or studios.
In 2022, the live awards ceremony will take place without audiences or media, and many studios and stars have said they will not work with the HFPA until reforms are made.
“Today marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the Golden Globes,” said Todd Boehly, president of Eldridge Industries, which aims to “transform the HFPA from a nonprofit organization of international entertainment reporters into members of a for-profit joint venture.”
Additionally, Todd Boehly said 310 current voters will be eligible to vote at the next ceremony in January 2024.
