Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready to step down if Ukraine was approved to join the EU and NATO.

Asked if he was ready to step down as president if necessary to reach a favorable agreement for Ukraine, President Zelensky said: “For peace, I am ready to do anything. If tomorrow Ukraine is accepted into the EU and NATO, if Russian troops withdraw and we receive security guarantees, I will no longer be needed.”

Meanwhile, reacting to recent statements by US officials, Mr. Zelensky said: "The US is now saying things that are very beneficial to Mr. Putin... because they want to please him."

“They want to meet quickly and win quickly. But what they want is a ceasefire, not victory,” Mr. Zelensky said.

Regarding future agreements involving Kiev, President Zelensky declared that Ukraine would not sign anything just to be “praised” and stressed that the country’s fate for generations to come would continue to be at stake.

He also rejected the idea of ceding territory in areas controlled by Russia, saying: "We will reclaim it all."

Referring to Europe, the Ukrainian president warned that the “old continent” would be weak if it could not rely on the US security umbrella. He said that although the “level of readiness” had increased in recent years, “in terms of military strength, the number of combat troops, the fleet, the air force, drones… I honestly think that Europe today is weak.”

He stressed that Ukraine had become more resilient in the past three years of fighting and warned that Russia would not be able to occupy Ukraine in the way it wanted to impose. However, he also noted that “there would be no Ukrainian victory without American support.”

Last week on February 12, US President Donald Trump stunned allies when he announced a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, about a process to quickly end the war in Ukraine.

Following the phone call, the two sides quickly promoted a negotiation between top officials from both the US and Russia in Saudi Arabia on February 18.

According to AFP, on February 16, US President Donald Trump continued to declare that he could meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin "very soon", and believed that Mr. Putin really wanted to end the conflict in Ukraine. The moves of both the US and Russia seem to be surprising many people because of the speed of deployment.

Also last week, Trump administration officials shocked European leaders by saying that Ukraine could not retake all of the territory controlled by Russian troops and would not receive NATO security protection as part of any peace deal.

In addition, the US side also emphasized that Europe will not participate in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine.

However, to reassure Europe and Ukraine, on February 16, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Ukraine and Europe would be part of any "real negotiations" to end the current war, but now was not the time.

The reassuring statements of the US Secretary of State could not dispel the doubts of both Ukraine and Europe that the US might “abandon” this region during the negotiation process with Russia.

An equally real risk is that President Trump could try to sign a peace deal on Ukraine with Russian President Putin, undermining Kiev and the security of the “old continent”.
