No large SUV, pickup truck or minivan has earned the IIHS's top safety rating in crash tests.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just released a list of cars that have received the highest scores in crash tests and safety ratings. The cars evaluated are from the 2024 model year.
The IIHS 2024 award list includes two levels: Top Safety Pick+ (the highest level) and Top Safety Pick. There are 49 Top Safety Pick winners and 22 Top Safety Pick+ winners. In 2023, the Top Safety Pick list has 20 vehicles, while the Top Safety Pick+ list has 28 vehicles.
The following is the list of 2024 Top Safety Pick+ awards:
Segment | Car model |
Small car | Acura Integra Mazda3 Toyota Prius |
Mid-size car | Honda Accord Hyundai Ioniq 6 |
Large luxury car | Genesis G80 electric |
Compact SUV | Genesis GV60 Honda HR-V Hyundai Kona Mazda CX-30 Mazda CX-50 |
Midsize SUV | Ford Explorer Kia Telluride Mazda CX-90 Nissan Pathfinder Subaru Ascent |
Midsize luxury SUV | Acura MDX BMW X3 Genesis GV80 Mercedes GLE Tesla Model Y |
The 2024 Top Safety Pick+ list stops at the midsize luxury SUV segment, without the next segments: minivans, large SUVs, and pickups. That means, no vehicle in these three segments achieved absolute safety scores.
Including Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+, Hyundai has the most awards with 16, including products from 3 brands: Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. Of which, Genesis alone has 7 awards. Toyota Group has a total of 13 awards, including Toyota and Lexus.
Compared to previous years, the IIHS standards are getting more stringent and challenging for automakers. The key changes to the 2024 vs. 2023 tests are the side impact test and the more severe barrier crash test.
Previously, from 2023, IIHS also made important changes to the test, such as placing a dummy behind the driver in a front left-side collision. The organization also adjusted the scoring method, and evaluated the side collision on the driver's side and the passenger's side as two separate items instead of the same as before.
However, things will get even tougher from next year, with upgraded tests, and higher ranking points for the top prize.
