The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on April 12 that the Taal volcano south of the capital Manila spewed a column of steam 2,400 meters high, but experts said there was little chance of the mountain erupting magma.

Based on seismic, imaging and acoustic data, the institute said that Taal volcano erupted between 5:11 a.m. and 5:24 a.m. local time (4:11 a.m. and 4:24 a.m. Vietnam time). This phenomenon could have been caused by the continuous release of hot gas at the volcano's crater. However, the level of shaking and ground deformation recorded at Taal volcano shows that there is no possibility of magma eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology remains under Alert Level 1 for Taal Volcano. This means that the volcano is still in an abnormal state and steam eruptions, tremors, light ashfall, accumulation and gas eruptions are possible, posing a hazard to surrounding areas. The agency advises pilots to avoid flying near Taal Volcano.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Taal Volcano, 66 kilometers south of Manila, is one of the country’s most active volcanoes. It last erupted in January 2020, displacing nearly 380,000 villagers and destroying farms, homes and roads.
