Police said they were investigating the deaths of Ms Garcia, the 27-year-old mayor of San Vicente, and communications adviser Jairo Loor, after their bodies were discovered in Manabi province.
Ecuadorian police confirmed that the country's youngest mayor - Ms. Brigitte Garcia - and an adviser were found shot dead in a car on the morning of March 24 (local time), amid a wave of violence caused by drug gangs.
Police said they were investigating the deaths of Ms Garcia, the 27-year-old mayor of San Vicente, and her communications adviser Jairo Loor, after their bodies were found in Manabi province. Police said both died from gunshot wounds.
Ms Garcia belonged to the Civic Revolution party of former President Rafael Correa. Mr Correa and Ms Luisa Gonzalez - the Civic Revolution's presidential candidate in Ecuador's recent elections - have called it an assassination.
On social network X, Ms. Gonzalez expressed: “I just learned that they assassinated our colleague, Mayor of San Vicente Brigitte Garcia... I don't know what to say, it's shocking, no one is safe in Ecuador, no one.”
Ms Garcia is the latest political figure in the country to be killed following the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August 2023.
Mr Villavicencio - a vocal critic of corruption and organised crime in Ecuador - was murdered as he left a stadium north of the capital Quito after a campaign rally there.
On January 8, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day nationwide state of emergency, deploying armed forces on the streets and in prisons, and imposing a curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. local time. Mr. Noboa also listed 22 criminal groups as terrorist organizations.
The decision came after riots broke out in six prisons across Ecuador, just one day after José Adolfo Macías - nicknamed "Fito," one of Ecuador's most dangerous prisoners and leader of the Los Choneros criminal gang - escaped from the prison where he was serving a 34-year sentence.
Since January 8, Ecuadorian police have made a series of arrests to suppress a wave of violence in the country, including the seizure of a local television studio in the city of Guayaquil.
Earlier this month, Ecuadorian authorities extended the state of emergency.
