The Russian Consulate General building in Marseille, southern France, was sealed off after an explosion on February 24.

Russian Consul General in Marseille Stanislav Oranskiy said today, February 24, that an unidentified suspect threw two objects at the diplomatic facility in southern France, one of which caused an explosion that damaged property. French TV channelBFMsaid the objects were petrol bombs, which appeared to have fallen into the garden of the Consulate General.

Firefighters were later deployed to the scene. There were no casualties in the incident.

"The explosions in the premises of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille have all the signs of a terrorist attack. We have asked France to take comprehensive measures to investigate the incident, as well as to strengthen security for Russian diplomatic missions," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

French officials have not commented on the explosion.

There is no information about suspects yet, but local media reported that police are searching and investigating data on a stolen car found near the scene.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned last week of the risk of Kiev attacking Moscow's diplomatic missions in Europe, in an attempt to derail peace talks and prevent Ukraine from making "excessive concessions" in a potential deal with Russia.

The incident in Marseille happened on the third anniversary of Russia's military operation in Ukraine. Several European Union leaders and ministers will be in Kiev today to show support for Ukraine, while French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are in the US to meet President Donald Trump.
