On October 12, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv as part of an extensive Middle East tour to demonstrate US support for Israel after the surprise attack by the Hamas Islamist movement and seek to end the current conflict.
In addition, Secretary of State Blinken's trip is also aimed at helping to reach an agreement to release hostages being held by Hamas - some of whom are US citizens - and to establish a safe corridor for civilians in the Gaza Strip to move out of the densely populated area.
In a related development, on October 11, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby announced that the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower - the second aircraft carrier of the US Navy - will be deployed to the Mediterranean.
Responding to the press conference, Mr. Kirby shared that the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and its strike group will depart as planned to the area under the responsibility of the European Command and will begin deployment in the next week or so. Meanwhile, the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group is present in the Eastern Mediterranean. White House officials stated that the US is ready to act if necessary if the conflict between Hamas and Israel escalates.
Earlier, on October 8, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that he had ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group to move to the eastern Mediterranean, closer to Israel. This force includes the aircraft carrier, a guided missile cruiser and four guided missile destroyers.
Secretary Austin also said the US has taken steps to increase the US Air Force's F-35, F-15, F-16 and A-10 fighter squadrons in the region. He confirmed the US will also provide ammunition to Israel.
