During his visit to Vietnam, on the evening of July 27, 2024, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken came to burn incense and offer condolences to the family of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong at the official residence at 5 Thien Quang Street, Hanoi.
Earlier, the White House said that President Joe Biden had announced that a delegation would travel to Vietnam on his behalf to express condolences over the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Members of the delegation also included United States Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink.
At the official residence on Thien Quang Street (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi), the US Secretary of State burned incense at the altar of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and signed the condolence book. Afterwards, Mr. Blinken talked and visited Mrs. Ngo Thi Man - the General Secretary's wife and family.
Earlier, in his condolence message, President Biden affirmed that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was the leader in building a deep relationship between the Vietnamese and American people. Thanks to the General Secretary's leadership, the two countries have achieved the friendship and partnership they have today.
The General Secretary's historic 2015 visit to the White House was an important milestone in bilateral relations.
"Thanks to the vision of the General Secretary, during my 2023 state visit to Hanoi, Vietnam and the United States became "Comprehensive Strategic Partners", the highest level of partnership in Vietnam's foreign policy.
