Reuters reported on December 22 that the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had captured two villages in Ukraine, including Lozova village in Kharkov province in the northeast and Sontsivka village in Donetsk province in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has made steady advances across Donetsk Oblast and is advancing on the town of Pokrovsk, a logistics hub and home to an important coke mine, and appears intent on closing in on the town of Kurakhove, further south.

Russian forces now control the village of Lozova, near the town of Kupiansk, and the village of Sontsivka north of Kurakhove.

On December 21, the Russian army also took control of the village of Kostiantynopolske, near Kurakhove.

According to a statement from the General Staff of the Ukrainian army, the Sontsivka area has suffered 26 Russian attacks in the past 24 hours.

Fierce fighting also took place near the town of Pokrovsk, with 34 Russian attempts to penetrate Ukrainian defenses.

Over the past two months, the Russian army has maintained its fastest advance in eastern Ukraine since Russia launched a special military operation in February 2022.
