The US Department of Defense said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke by phone with his Israeli counterpart Israel Katz.
The Pentagon released a readout of the call, saying: "Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the United Nations International Force (UNIFIL) in Lebanon."
Last October, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued a statement condemning recent attacks on UNIFIL forces, calling on all parties to ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel.
The statement was made amid continuing tensions in Lebanon, especially along the border between Lebanon and Israel. The tensions have not only caused casualties among soldiers but have also had a strong impact on Lebanese civilians, with over 3,500 people killed.
Also on November 23, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced that it had sent a diplomatic note to the United Nations and international organizations, warning of the risk of being attacked by Israel after Tel Aviv accused Baghdad of allowing militia forces to attack Israeli territory.
In the note, Iraq called on the international community to prevent the risk of escalating the conflict from Israel.
Since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, the Iraqi Islamic Resistance Movement - an organization of Shi'ite militias, has repeatedly used drones and missiles to attack Israeli territory.
