Australia has officially joined a controversial program to equip its navy with nuclear submarines under a newly established security partnership framework with the United States and the United Kingdom (AUKUS).
Australia will receive assistance and technology transfer from the US and UK to develop nuclear submarines within the framework of AUKUS cooperation.
Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutto and US and UK diplomats signed an agreement on November 22 that will allow the parties to exchange “sensitive information” on nuclear power plant technology for use in the navy. This is the first agreement related to nuclear submarine technology to be signed publicly since the three countries announced the establishment of AUKUS on September 15.
“This agreement will pave the way for cooperation that will further strengthen our shared defense posture,” President Joe Biden said in a statement ahead of the signing ceremony. US Charge d’Affaires to Australia Michael Goldman, along with the British High Commissioner to Australia and Defence Minister Peter Dutto, signed the latest agreement on behalf of the three countries.
Under the AUKUS cooperation framework, Australia plans to acquire eight nuclear-powered submarines with stealth capabilities, capable of long-term operations and long-range missions. The US, UK and Australia will also strengthen cooperation in the fields of cyber security, artificial intelligence, quantum, and seabed research.
