Every day, Nguyen Thi Huynh jogs twice, helps with housework, meditates, and then goes to the gym in the evening.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huynh, also known as Mrs. Tu, lives with her children and grandchildren in Thach Trung ward, Ha Tinh city. She said that when she was young, although she worked in the fields all year round to help her family, whenever she had free time, she would take the opportunity to walk around the village, 4-5 km each day. Now, at the age of 97, with 9 children, 29 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, she still maintains the habit of exercising.
Every day, Mr. Huynh wakes up at 5:30. After personal hygiene, he puts on his shoes to exercise.
After a few minutes of warming up, Mr. Huynh went to the volleyball court next to his house to jog. At first, he walked slowly, after about two laps, he started to run faster. On average, every morning, he walked and jogged for about 10 - 15 minutes.
After jogging, Mr. Huynh returned to his room to rest, and at nearly 7 o'clock, he went to a restaurant near his house for breakfast. He likes to eat beef noodle soup or pork roll, each serving costs 25,000 - 30,000 VND, and he always orders a lot of noodles and eats it all. "Breakfast is the most important meal to maintain energy for the long day, so I don't skip any meal, even when I'm tired, I still try to eat," Mr. Huynh said.
Mr. Huynh always likes to exercise, sitting in one place makes him feel "tired". With light tasks such as sweeping the floor, washing dishes, picking vegetables... he often does everything, even though his children and grandchildren always stop him and do not force him to do it. Because of his old age, his children and grandchildren always follow him closely to monitor his health. When he sees him tired from running or doing something too hard, Mr. Vo Ta Nam (35 years old, grandson) often advises him to rest and gives him medicine to help regulate his blood pressure and heart rate.
Every day, Mr. Huynh usually spends about two hours in the middle of the morning sitting alone in meditation and reading the sutras.
He often eats lunch and dinner with his children and grandchildren. He doesn't have a separate menu, and each meal consists of two full bowls of rice. "Exercising regularly helps me feel more appetizing," said Mr. Huynh.
After his nap, from 2 p.m., Mr. Huynh is sometimes taken by his children and grandchildren to the gym 3-4 km away from home to jog. He started working out at the gym in April 2024, because at that time, his relatives saw him walking outside in the unpredictable sun and rain, which was harmful to his health. At first, he was a bit hesitant because the gym was full of young people, but gradually he liked it. When jogging on the treadmill, he started at 6-7 km/h, then increased the speed to a higher level. He ran and laughed happily, occasionally waving his arms up and down to the music. Each run lasted about 40 minutes.
In addition to jogging, Mr. Huynh also practices pull-ups and parallel bars with assistance under the guidance of a coach.
Mr. Huynh also conquered the 2kg dumbbells. He shared that when he feels tired after exercising, he should relax and breathe gently to quickly regain his strength. The 97-year-old lady loves to chew betel, in her free time she takes out the betel nut and crushes it and sits down to enjoy it, dozens of times a day.
On days when it doesn't rain, in the late afternoon, he goes to the park about 1 km from his house to jog around the lake.
Mr. Huynh usually runs two to three laps around the lake, with a total distance of about 3.5 km, each time taking about 30 - 40 minutes. After that, he goes home to shower and have dinner with his children and grandchildren. Occasionally, Mr. Huynh also participates in sports activities organized by Thach Trung ward, to encourage everyone to compete well.
Over the past six months, videos of Mr. Huynh running and exercising have been recorded by his children and posted on social media, attracting millions of views. In the near future, Mr. Huynh will run a short distance race in Ha Tinh at the invitation of the Organizing Committee to inspire athletes and the community. In the past few days, in the evenings, he has asked his daughter-in-law to turn on her phone or computer to learn about the format and experience of participating in races to gain experience.TB (according to VnExpress)
