In the 2023 season, shortly after moving from Scottish club Celtic Glasgow, Giakoumakis scored 17 goals in 27 MLS games for Atlanta United. The 28-year-old Greek striker is currently second in the race for the Golden Boot, just three goals behind the leader, Denis Bouanga of Los Angeles FC.
On November 1, in the round of 16 of the MLS playoffs, Atlanta United lost 0-2 at Colombus Crew. However, Giakoumakis and his teammates still hope to turn the tables in the second leg.
Messi joined Inter Miami in July, four months after Giakoumakis. A month later, the Argentine helped his new club win the Leagues Cup and reach the final of the American Cup. However, due to injury, Messi only played six MLS games. So when Messi was named in the three-man shortlist for Rookie of the Year, there were many questions.

Atlanta United became the first club to win the Rookie of the Season award twice in a row. Last year, Messi's 2022 World Cup-winning teammate Thiago Almada won the award. Atlanta United also became the second club to have three players win the award. Their first winner was Miguel Almiron in 2017. Almiron joined Newcastle in 2019 and is now one of the stars of the Premier League.
On October 30, Messi won the 2023 Ballon d'Or. The award was voted for by 100 journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe followed. Messi set a record of winning eight Ballons d'Or, while increasing the gap with the second-placed Cristiano Ronaldo to three titles. During the Ballon d'Or voting period, the 36-year-old striker won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Ligue 1 with PSG and the Leagues Cup with Inter Miami.(according toGoal)
