In the early morning of May 16, MU struggled to defeat Newcastle 3-2 in the make-up match of round 34 of the English Premier League.
The return of Bruno Fernandes helped Man Utd significantly improve their playing style. In the first half, coach Erik ten Hag's team played evenly with the higher ranked opponent, even creating more chances than Newcastle (9 compared to 7).
In the 31st minute, the pressure from the Old Trafford team was rewarded with the opening goal by young talent Kobbie Mainoo. From a pass from Amad Diallo on the right wing, Mainoo turned and finished, defeating Martin Dubravka. In this situation, Kieran Trippier made a positioning error, causing the away team's offside trap to not work effectively.
Despite taking the lead, Man Utd still left many concerns in defense. In the first half, Casmeiro, Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat had to work hard to help the home team keep a clean sheet, against Newcastle's direct attacks down the middle.
The efforts of the defense only helped the home team hold out until the 49th minute. After a period of good play, Amrabat suddenly made a mistake, creating an opportunity for Jacob Murphy to escape, before hanging the ball for Anthony Gordon to head close to the goal, bringing the match back to the starting line.
The away fans' joy did not last long. Just 8 minutes after equalizing, Newcastle conceded a second goal. Amad once again made his mark with a beautiful shot, raising the score to 2-1 for MU.
In the remaining time, the two clubs played with great dedication. The drama was pushed up in the final minutes, when each team scored another goal. In the 84th minute, Bruno assisted Rasmus Hojlund to shoot diagonally, raising the score to 3-1. In the 90+2 minute, Lewis Hall forced Onana to pick the ball out of the net after a classy kick from outside the penalty area.
The match ended 3-2 in favor of the home team. Man Utd won 3 points in the last match of the season at home. In the final round, the "Red Devils" will face Brighton away, while Newcastle will face Brentford.
Speaking after the victory, coach Erik ten Hag thanked the fans for their support and declared that he would do his best in the FA Cup final with the goal of winning the title.
