Center-back Harry Maguire has not agreed to leave, even though Man Utd has reached a $38 million agreement with West Ham.

Goal reported that Maguire still wants to stay and fight for a starting position. As of yesterday, August 13, the 30-year-old centre-back has not yet negotiated a personal agreement with West Ham and has not left as Man Utd's leadership wishes.

Previously, on August 9, the two clubs reached a transfer agreement worth 38 million USD. Man Utd accepted a loss of 58 million compared to when buying Maguire from Leicester City in 2019.

"Maguire has the ability to become a top centre-back," Man Utd manager Erik Ten Hag said on August 13 at a press conference ahead of today's opening game against Wolves. "He's England's best centre-back, so why shouldn't he be our best centre-back? But he has to prove it. When he doesn't have the confidence to fight, he has to go. Then he has to make a decision, but so far I'm happy with him."

Ten Hag also insisted that Man Utd need more high-class players. Such players may not be regular starters, but they are needed to create internal competition and meet the demands of a long-distance race. "There is an internal competition in the team. Every player has to fight for his place," Ten Hag added.

At centre-back, Maguire is currently Ten Hag's fifth choice. The former Ajax coach usually chooses centre-backs in order of priority: Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, left-back Luke Shaw, then the Englishman.

This summer, Maguire is no longer the captain of Man Utd. Ten Hag stripped the captain's armband from "number 5" to give it to Bruno Fernandes.

After playing well in the first two seasons at Man Utd, Maguire has been on a downward spiral since the 2021-2022 season. The 30-year-old centre-back often shows a lack of confidence and makes mistakes of lower-class players. However, when he joined England in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, Maguire showed a different image. He was also a member of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2021.

In 2019, Man Utd bought Maguire for a record fee for a defender of 96 million USD. Man City recently broke this record, with the decision to spend 99 million to buy Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

On the evening of August 14, Man Utd will start the 2023-2024 Premier League with a match against Wolves. Maguire may be on the list of players.
