Slovakia beat Belgium 1-0 in an incredibly unlucky day for Lukaku.
Lukaku entered the match with a record on his shoulders, as he made his 11th appearance in the EURO, the most for the Belgian national team. But the joy was short-lived. Lukaku missed no less than 5 chances, had his goal disallowed by VAR twice, and then painfully watched Belgium lose shockingly to Slovakia.
In just the first 5 minutes of the match, Lukaku and Trossard had two situations facing the Slovakian goalkeeper but failed. Before the end of the first half, Lukaku once again only had to beat Martin Dubravka but he handled the ball clumsily, letting "the ball trip over his foot" and fly wide of the goalpost.
Bad luck continues to haunt striker number 10.
In the 55th minute, Lukaku scored a goal against Slovakia, but the VAR referee team determined that the Belgian striker was offside as he was standing half a body below the opposing defender. In the 85th minute, VAR denied the poor striker a goal for the second time. This time, Lukaku finished decisively, but Openda handled the ball before making the assist.
Twice the joy was broken. Coach Domenico Tedesco could only shake his head in dismay as he watched his players lose despite having the advantage for almost the entire match.
Just when the Belgians were at their most excited, Doku's wrong pass from the corner flag in the 7th minute created the conditions for Slovakia's attackers to open the scoring. Goalkeeper Casteels saved the first shot, but when Ivan Schranz fired in from close range, his luck ran out.
Slovakia led 1-0 from the first half and successfully defended this fragile advantage until the referee blew the final whistle.
They played with all their might, taking full advantage of their opponents' mistakes and thanking the gods for their two denied goals.
Belgium have never lost to Slovakia in a direct confrontation. Before this match, Belgium had a streak of 15 consecutive unbeaten matches. This shocking defeat will force the Red Devils to seriously reconsider their approach to the match, as well as adjust their attack, if they do not want to say goodbye to EURO 2024 right from the group stage.
In Group E, Romania beat Ukraine 3-0, temporarily leading. Slovakia ranked 2nd, Belgium ranked 3rd.
