Weightlifting - Tran Dinh Thang wins dramatic gold medal

Vietnam's weightlifting coaching staff burst into tears after Dinh Thang successfully lifted 209kg in the clean and jerk.

After losing to his Thai opponent Rungsuriya Panya in the snatch, the Vietnamese weightlifter entered the pressure-filled clean and jerk. His first lift, 196kg, was penalized but was later recognized after the coaching staff appealed. Panya successfully lifted 195kg, 200kg and then 203kg. The Thai weightlifter celebrated as if he had the victory in his hands. At this time, the gap between Panya and Dinh Thang was 12kg.

Dinh Thang was forced to lift the weight to 209kg and failed on the second attempt. The third time, he was flagged by two referees for a foul. However, after the coaching staff complained, the referee determined that the Vietnamese weightlifter had lifted the weight legally. As a result, Dinh Thang won the men's over 89kg category with a total lift of 359kg, 1kg more than Panya.
