All gold and silver medals in the men's 55 kg category at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships belong to two Vietnamese athletes.
Lai Gia Thanh topped the rankings in the snatch (men's 55 kg) with a score of 123 kg. In the clean and jerk, this athlete lifted 146 kg and maintained the number one position. Of course, he also won the gold medal in the total lift with a score of 269 kg.
Behind Lai Gia Thanh in all three rankings is teammate Ngo Son Dinh. He achieved 117 kg in snatch, 144 kg in clean and jerk and 261 kg in total. Ngo Son Dinh won 3 silver medals. The bronze medal in this weight category went to Nattawat Chomchuen (Thailand).
Lai Gia Thanh is the reigning SEA Games champion in the men's 55 kg category.
The World Weightlifting Championships take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from September 4 to September 17. This is one of the tournaments that will count towards qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics for athletes. Athletes must participate in the World Championships to have a chance to compete for the Olympics next year.
However, Lai Gia Thanh and Ngo Son Dinh's 55 kg weight class is not included in the list of weightlifting events for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Therefore, despite their high achievements, Lai Gia Thanh and Ngo Son Dinh cannot participate in the Olympics in their favorite weight class.
