On May 16, Lao authorities announced that they had discovered a Buddha statue measuring at least 2 meters tall during excavations in a sandy area near the Mekong River in Bokeo province, northern Laos. This is the largest statue found during an excavation of antiquities in Tonpheung district of this province.
According to Lao National Television, the excavation also uncovered nine other Buddha statues. The age and origin of the statues are unknown. Most of the statues are made of bronze and some are engraved with inscriptions.
Archaeological excavations in Tonpheung district began last March. Following the discovery of several statuettes, the Lao government appointed a national committee of senior officials to ensure the excavation was conducted in a professional manner.
