The Vietnamese chess community has been staying up all night waiting for the men's individual final match of the 2023 World Chess Championship to take place in the US.

This is the first time Vietnam's number 1 chess player Lai Ly Huynh has won the right to enter the final. And his opponent is Manh Than, the runner-up of China's 2023 chess tournament.

After 8 games in the group stage, both players were leading with 13 points.

According to the tournament rules, Lai Ly Huynh and Manh Than must enter the final round to compete for the championship.

Lai Ly Huynh and his Chinese opponent gave fans an exciting game.

Both players had chances to win. However, after nearly 4 hours of play, they had to shake hands and draw.

This result forced the final match to go into a rapid chess extra game to determine the winner.

In this match, Lai Ly Huynh failed and had to accept the silver medal. This is also the second time in history that Vietnam has won the world men's individual silver medal. Nguyen Thanh Bao is the Vietnamese male chess player who won the first world silver medal in 2009.

In this round, Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang won against Shoshi Kazuharu (Japan) to take 12th place overall. However, Vietnamese chess team could not defend the men's team championship.

The Vietnamese team with Lai Ly Huynh and Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang only won the silver medal in the men's team with a total ranking of 14. The gold medal in this event belonged to Singapore with Alvin Woo Tsung Han and Low Yi Hao with a total ranking of 12.

Thus, at the 2023 World Chess Championship, Vietnam won 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals. Of which, the gold medal was brought home by Tran Nguyen Minh Hang in the U12 female age group.
