Exhausted from treating my nephew's thalassemia

At 9 months old, Doan Ngoc Han (born in 2013) in Dong village, Hong Lac commune (Thanh Ha) weighed only about 5 kg, had a poor appetite, and was slow to grow.

Hong Lac Commune Women's Union and Dong Village Women's Union presented gifts to Mr. Hue's family.

The family took the child to a central hospital for a check-up and found out that the child had thalassemia. The child's mother returned to her hometown in Quang Ninh and has not had any contact with the child's grandparents, Doan Van Hue and Vu Thi Bich, since then.

At that time, her father was doing military service. When he returned home after being discharged from the army, he saw his wife leaving him and his child sick, and Han's father also went to work far away. The burden of treating his child fell on Mr. Hue and his wife.

Previously, Mr. Hue had a farm raising pigs and soft-shell turtles and had a tractor for rent to households in the commune, and Mrs. Bich worked as a worker. However, when his grandchild got sick and his son and daughter-in-law left, Mr. Hue had to downsize the farm and liquidate the machinery to take care of his grandchild.

At the age of 2, Han had to have her spleen removed and suffered from slow physical development. Now 8 years old, she is only 1 meter tall and weighs nearly 13 kg. Besides drinking milk, she can only eat a few bites of rice at each meal.

For the past 8 years, the grandparents and Han have been going to the hospital regularly, having to have blood transfusions at least once a month, and also buying medicine to remove iron, nourish the liver, kidneys, etc. Every 3 months, Mr. Hue has to buy medicine for his grandchild for an amount of 10-14 million VND. This cost does not include travel and accommodation expenses during the days his grandchild has to have blood transfusions at central hospitals.

Recently, due to the complicated Covid-19 epidemic situation, Mr. Hue did not take Han to Hanoi but instead had a blood transfusion at the Provincial General Hospital. Many times the hospital's blood reserve ran out, Mr. Hue had to donate blood to exchange for blood for the hospital.

After 8 years of taking his grandchild for medical treatment, Mr. Hue's health is not as good as before. Up to now, he and his wife have borrowed hundreds of millions of dong to treat their grandchild.

Mr. Hue shared: “My family’s circumstances are difficult, so I have to take care of my grandchild and try to do farming to earn more income to pay for his treatment. Just looking at him makes me feel sorry.”

Ms. Bui Thi Phuong, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Hong Lac Commune (Thanh Ha) said that Mr. Hue's family is one of the most disadvantaged households in the commune. In the past, the local authorities have paid attention to supporting his family, but it is not much. We hope that benefactors will help to ease his family's difficulties and have money to treat his niece.

Please send any help to the address: Mr. Doan Van Hue in Dong village, Hong Lac commune, Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province, phone number 0976.946.509.

PEACEFUL
