On February 21, Indian officials said about 300 people, including women and children, had unusual symptoms after eating food at a religious event in the western state of Maharashtra.
The incident occurred on the evening of February 20 during a week-long Hindu event in Somthana village, Buldhana district, 486 km northeast of the capital Mumbai of Maharashtra state.
Dozens of people reported experiencing symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and discomfort and were taken to a medical facility for examination, according to authorities. However, due to the hospital's small size and lack of beds, many patients were treated in spaces outside the hospital building.
A local official said most of the patients had been discharged and the rest were being monitored at various hospitals. The cause of many of the cases is believed to be food poisoning.
Authorities are investigating the incident. Authorities have collected food samples for testing and analysis.
