Jordan asks AFC to verify gender of Iranian female goalkeeper

November 15, 2021 17:50

The Jordan Football Association (JFA) questioned the gender of the Iranian women's national team goalkeeper and sent a petition to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

According to Arabic, JFA President Ali Bin Al Hussein posted an article on his personal page, asking the AFC to open an investigation and apply appropriate measures when there is doubt about a player's eligibility to participate in competitions organized by the AFC.

Mr. Al Hussein shared the JFA's petition to the AFC, with the content: "This is a very serious matter if it is true. Please wake up, AFC".

The JFA has raised questions about the gender of Iran's female goalkeeper Zohreh Koudaei, who directly contributed to the team's victory and qualification for the 2022 Women's Asian Cup finals. At that time, Iran beat Jordan 4-2 on penalties to win a ticket to India next year. Goalkeeper Koudaei saved two penalties from the opponent.

In the JFA's petition to the AFC, it reads: "Given the evidence presented by Jordan, we request the AFC to launch an urgent, transparent and clear investigation by an independent medical committee to verify the eligibility of the Iranian goalkeeper. The Iranian women's football team has a history of gender issues and doping issues. We want to follow legal procedures to maintain the integrity of Asian playgrounds."

This is not the first time that Iran’s women’s team has been involved in controversy over the gender of its players. In 2015, Mojtabi Sharifi, an official close to the Iran Football Federation, confirmed that eight male players were on the Iranian women’s team that participated in tournaments in 2008. This shocked the Iranian and Asian football world at the time.
