On May 9, Iran released seven crew members of a Portuguese-flagged container ship that was seized in the Gulf on April 13 on suspicion of having ties to Israel.

According to the announcement of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these 7 people include 5 Indians, 1 Filipino and 1 Estonian.

They were members of a 25-man crew on board the MSC Aries.

In a statement, Portugal welcomed the move and demanded the "immediate release" of the remaining 17 crew members and the MSC Aries.

On April 13, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had seized the container ship MCS Aries "linked to the Israeli government" in the Strait of Hormuz along with 25 crew members.

On April 16, Portugal summoned the Iranian ambassador to demand the release of the ship and crew.

Iran announced on April 27 that it was considering releasing more crew members.
