Some rumors about the iPhone 16 Plus suggest that this Apple phone model will be harder to sell than its predecessors because of an unwanted 'step back'.
Battery life is considered by Apple to be one of the biggest selling points of the company's devices. When Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone in 2007, the Apple co-founder said that the smartphone had excellent power management.
At the time, it boasted 16 hours of audio playback, five hours of talk time, video playback or web browsing. “That’s significantly better” than any competitor, he added.
The upcoming iPhone 16 Plus may not keep that tradition, according to CNET.
A new series of leaks on social media say that Apple's $899 iPhone 16 Plus will have a smaller battery than the previous version.
The 6.7-inch Plus model, which is considered the budget version of the Pro model iPhone starting at $999, is expected to have a 9% smaller battery than its predecessor. Meanwhile, other iPhone 16 models are expected to have up to 6% more battery capacity.
The leak comes from MacRumors, which translates it from Chinese leaker OvO Baby Sauce OvO. Previous leaks tracked by MacRumors have suggested similar battery changes.
Leaker Baby Baby Sauce on Weibo claims to have obtained battery details for the iPhone 16 series. The cited source says that the regular iPhone 16 will have a 3,561mAh battery, up from the 3,349mAh on the iPhone 15 model. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is said to have a 4,006mAh capacity, down from the 4,383mAh on last year's model.
Other rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have more power-efficient displays. And with annual improvements in chip design and software features, the actual battery life of the iPhone 16 Plus may not change from before. However, industry insiders tend to view such moves as a step backward.
In addition to the battery and display changes, Apple is also rumored to add the iPhone 15 Pro's well-received Action button in place of the iPhone 16 Plus' mute switch.
Apple is also expected to continue developing AI technology on the new iPhones, with a series of software upgrades expected to be announced during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. In the past, Apple has also made AI-based improvements, such as better photo editing capabilities or video stabilization, some of the key selling points of its annual iPhone upgrades.
