Huawei sells 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro phones in just 6 weeks

Huawei Technologies sold 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro handsets in six weeks, research firm Counterpoint Research said, amid strong demand for Huawei's premium product despite a slump in the smartphone market.

Of those, more than 400,000 were sold in the past two weeks, around the time Apple launched the iPhone 15 in the mainland market. In the first 17 days of its launch, iPhone 15 sales fell 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14, Counterpoint Research said.

Huawei surprised the world with its high-end Mate 60 Pro phone in late August 2023. Many analysts said the use of domestically produced chips marked a breakthrough after years of facing US technology sanctions.

Counterpoint senior analyst Ivan Lam commented that demand for the Mate 60 Pro was quite high, with available stock quickly sold out as soon as the product appeared.

The global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2023 fell 8% to a 10-year low due to falling demand for major brands.

Huawei and Transsion Group were the only brands to post growth during that period.

In China, smartphone shipments in August 2023 were largely unchanged, up 0.03% year-on-year to 18.99 million handsets, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).
