Head coach Kim Sang Sik is confident that if the Vietnamese team prepares carefully from now on, we will have good results against Indonesia and achieve success at the ASEAN Cup 2024.
On the afternoon of May 21, the ASEAN Cup 2024 draw took place in Hanoi. The draw placed the Vietnamese team in Group B with Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos.
In Group A, Thailand has an easier time as their opponents are only Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia and Timor Leste/Brunei.
Among the opponents of the Vietnamese team in Group B, Indonesia is considered the toughest. In the last 3 matches against Indonesia (2 matches in the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup and 1 match at the Asian Cup), the Vietnamese team all suffered defeats.
Speaking to the media right after the draw, coach Kim Sang Sik said: "Recently, the Vietnam team's performance against Indonesia has not been good. But if we prepare well from now, I think we can completely make up for what happened. We will try our best to win."
Speaking more about the remaining opponents, the Korean coach highly appreciated the Philippines team for having added new players. The coaching staff of the Vietnam team will study to find a way to deal with them.
When asked about the goal of the Vietnamese team at the ASEAN Cup 2024, Mr. Kim Sang Sik expressed his opinion:
"My goal in every tournament is always to win and aim for the championship. Although the opponents are not easy, but as I said, if we prepare well, we have a chance to win against all opponents. We will prepare well to be able to aim for the championship."
Mr. Kim also shared more about the plans for the Vietnamese team when they gather in early June to prepare for the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
He said: "I am a bit nervous because of the fans' expectations. I will have to research and find a way to train the players to achieve the goal. I will try to help the players compete as a unified team, bringing Vietnamese fans beautiful performances, worthy of praise."
When asked about his predecessor, Coach Park Hang Seo, who had many successes with Vietnamese football, Mr. Kim said: "He is a football hero of Vietnam.
I have great respect and admiration for Mr. Park. For Vietnamese football and for Vietnamese fans, I will try my best and will also ask for advice from Coach Park when needed to create the best possible team."
Vietnam team has advantage over Indonesia
Speaking after the ASEAN Cup 2024 draw, Mr. Tran Anh Tu, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), said: "Many people want the Vietnamese team and Indonesia to be in different groups. But in my opinion, whether in the same group or different group with Indonesia, the first goal of the Vietnamese team is still to win a ticket to the semi-finals.
According to the draw results, the Vietnamese team will play at home against Indonesia, which is a big advantage for us. The Vietnamese team always sets the goal of going as far as possible. But as I said, we need to go step by step, first we need to reach the semi-finals, then strive to pass the semi-finals, and win a ticket to the final."
The ASEAN Cup 2024 will take place from November 23 to December 21. In the group stage, 5 teams will play a round-robin, each team will play 2 home matches and 2 away matches. At the end of the group stage, the top 2 teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals. From the semi-finals onwards, the teams will play home and away matches. The Thai team is currently the defending champion of this tournament.
