Hong Kong arrests 7 in biggest money laundering case ever

February 16, 2024 10:56

On February 16, Hong Kong Customs (China) said it had arrested 7 people involved in the largest money laundering case ever in this special administrative region, with an amount of up to about 14 billion HKD (1.8 billion USD).

According to the source, the seven people, aged between 23 and 74, were members of a large-scale transnational organization that used many different shell companies and bank accounts to transfer large sums of money from overseas to Hong Kong. One account once received HK$100 million (US$12.8 million) in just one day. Authorities said that of the HK$14 billion, HK$2.9 billion (US$371 million) was suspected to be related to a mobile app scam in India. The transnational organization had transacted with partners in India to export electronic equipment, diamonds, gemstones and precious metals. The proceeds were then transferred to accounts in Hong Kong for money laundering.

Authorities also seized electronic devices, documents and more than 8,000 carats of synthetic gemstones, allegedly destined for export to India. The operation was coordinated by law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong, India and other countries. Late last month, authorities also arrested a 34-year-old Hong Kong man suspected of masterminding the transnational syndicate. Hong Kong authorities are continuing to investigate the case.

The previous record money laundering case involved HK$6 billion ($767 million). In January 2023, authorities arrested nine people in connection with the case.
