On June 15, over 1.5 million Muslims braved the heat to reach Mount Arafat to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage and perform hours of prayer. The Hajj is one of the world's largest religious ceremonies.

Pilgrims begin arriving at Mount Arafat at dawn for one of the most challenging of the annual rituals, climbing a 70-meter-high rocky hill to reach the spot where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his final sermon.

This year's Hajj comes as the Muslim community looks to the Palestinians who have been hit hard by the Hamas-Israel conflict in Gaza. Saudi Arabian media reported that around 2,000 Palestinians are attending this year's Hajj pilgrimage at the special invitation of Saudi Arabia's King Salman.

The celebrations are increasingly being affected by climate change. A Saudi study published last month found that temperatures in the region are rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius per decade. Temperatures are forecast to reach 43 degrees Celsius on June 15, making it difficult for pilgrims heading to Mount Arafat, who have spent the night in tents in the Mina Valley outside Mecca.

Saudi Arabian officials have urged pilgrims to drink plenty of water and take precautions against sun exposure. In 2023, the country recorded more than 10,000 cases of heatstroke, of which 10% were sunstroke, according to a Saudi official.
