About 35,000 supporters of President Yoon gathered near Gwanghwamun Square, while 400 meters away, members of the Confederation of Labor demonstrated demanding the immediate arrest of President Yoon.
According to Yonhap news agency, on January 4, tens of thousands of people poured into the center of the South Korean capital Seoul to participate in various protests in support of and against suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, after he was accused of illegally imposing martial law on December 3, 2024.
About 35,000 supporters of President Yoon gathered near Gwanghwamun Square at 1 p.m., before suddenly moving to the Hannam-dong area of Yongsan District to confront anti-protesters.
Meanwhile, just 400 meters away, members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) held a protest demanding the immediate arrest of President Yoon.
The situation became more tense when KCTU tried to advance towards the President's residence but was blocked by police, leading to a scuffle that resulted in the arrest of two protesters for allegedly assaulting police officers.
The protests caused severe traffic congestion in the area, forcing Hangangjin station to temporarily close and trains to run through without stopping.
The development comes after the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) made a failed attempt to arrest President Yoon on January 3, following a six-hour standoff with security forces at the presidential residence.
The National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon after he declared martial law, and is now awaiting a final ruling from the Constitutional Court.
While the investigation was underway, President Yoon refused to appear for questioning, leading to the court issuing an arrest warrant.
