On August 30, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency of South Korea announced that it had just arrested and handed over to the prosecution a suspect accused of making hundreds of fake videos using deepfake technology and spreading them on social media.
According to Yonhap news agency, the suspect is a man in his 20s, accused of creating and distributing 279 deepfake pornographic videos between May and July. The subject made the fake videos, using portraits and personal information of the victims.
Seoul police said that up to 246 people have been victims of the subject. The suspect was arrested on August 22. Police affirmed that they will strictly deal with not only deepfake criminals but also those who edit, combine or manipulate other people's photos for malicious purposes.
In addition, Seoul Police also said that another man in his 30s was referred to the prosecution after being arrested on suspicion of distributing about 20,000 pornographic videos on the internet from December 2020 to present. He is accused of distributing 20,638 pornographic videos, including 6 videos containing child sexual abuse and 9 videos filmed illegally.
