One day after a car crashed into a ditch in Nam Dinh, killing 7 people, Nguyen Van Thai (born in 1995, residing in residential group 8, Nam Van ward, Nam Dinh city, Nam Dinh province) is still in shock.

He was one of the people who jumped into the ditch to rescue and save the lives of 2 of the 9 victims in the crashed car.

According to Mr. Thai, at around 3:00 p.m. on January 30 (the second day of Tet), when he heard a loud noise outside, he ran out and saw a car had plunged into a ditch, almost completely submerged in water.

"When I discovered the accident, I immediately rode my motorbike to the scene. Hearing that there were people trapped in the car, I took off my jacket and jumped into the water with everyone else to try to rescue the victims trapped in the car. At that time, I and the people around tried to find every way to rescue people as quickly as possible," the man recounted.

After breaking the door of the crashed car, Mr. Thai and everyone else brought the victims to shore. When they brought a little girl (Nguyen Ngoc Diep, born in 2013) to shore, seeing the victim lying motionless, many people assumed that she had died.

"As a discharged military medic, when I saw the girl lying motionless, I couldn't bear it, so I carried her on my shoulder and ran a few laps, then saw her vomit water. I immediately stopped giving her artificial respiration, when I saw the girl breathing and her face turned rosy again, I breathed a sigh of relief and carried her to the ambulance," said Mr. Thai.

After the rescue work was completed and the victims were taken away from the scene, Mr. Thai was shocked to hear that Diep had died.

"At that time, I was shocked, tormented and regretful. I think that if I had gone into the ambulance with him, things might have been different," said Mr. Thai.

Not believing that Diep had died, Mr. Thai ran to Nam Dinh General Hospital to inquire but still had no news. The man continued to go to Nam Dinh Children's Hospital and learned that Diep was still alive and was being treated there.

"When I arrived at the Children's Hospital, I was worried, not knowing how he was. When I got to his room and heard "I won't get vaccinated", I breathed a sigh of relief knowing he was still healthy, and I was able to leave with peace of mind," Mr. Thai said emotionally.
