On January 8, the Government of the Republic of Chad said that gunmen attacked the Presidential complex in the capital N'Djamena. Security forces killed 18 people, while one security officer was killed and several others were injured.
In a video posted on Facebook hours after the attack, Chadian government spokesman and foreign minister Abderaman Koulamallah said the situation was under control and the attempt to destabilize the country had been thwarted. He also confirmed that 18 attackers were killed and six wounded. One security force member was killed and three others were wounded, one seriously.
According to security sources, the incident occurred at nearly 8 p.m. local time, or early morning on January 9 (Vietnam time), when gunmen attempted to storm the presidential complex. Security forces mobilized tanks to control the attack.
The incident comes less than two weeks after Chad held a general election that had low voter turnout. Chad has been regularly attacked by the jihadist group Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region.
