Reduce labor with automatic voltage stabilization initiative

In grid operation, voltage is one of the basic and important parameters that determine the quality of electricity. However, maintaining voltage is difficult when operators have to do it manually.

Based on practical needs, the group of authors Ngo Minh Nhat, Pham Trung Nghia, Pham Hoang Phuong, Ngo Van Vong and colleagues at Hai Duong Electricity have researched and applied the initiative "Automatically maintaining medium voltage busbar voltage of 110kV transformers using control center software" (abbreviated as automatic voltage stabilization). With this solution, the voltage is maintained completely automatically by software instead of humans. This solution is applied at 110kV transformer stations, effectively supporting the mobile working groups of the High Voltage Grid Operation Management Team.

“With this software, the system will automatically recognize whether the voltage value is low or high compared to the regulations to adjust the appropriate value. The on-duty team does not have to monitor or perform voltage adjustment operations. The solution also reduces the delay in the voltage adjustment process. If previously the delay was often calculated in minutes, sometimes it could last from 5-10 minutes, then applying this software, the voltage adjustment process takes place almost instantly, the delay is only calculated in seconds”, said engineer Ngo Minh Nhat, Control Department (Hai Duong Electricity), a member of the author team.

In addition, voltage can be adjusted at multiple locations at the same time. The special thing is that with this solution, the unit does not have to spend money on additional equipment investment. With these new features, the solution helps free up labor and increase work efficiency for the on-duty operating team. Stable voltage helps improve the quality of power transmission; reduce power loss, save electricity, increase the durability of equipment on the grid, thereby reducing annual repair and maintenance costs; reduce the risk of incidents due to overvoltage or undervoltage.

Hai Duong Power Company is managing 17 110kV transformer stations with 34 transformers. In grid operation, 110kV transformer stations help convert voltage from the 110kV transmission system to the 22kV distribution voltage level to serve customers' electricity needs. The application of this solution contributes significantly to ensuring voltage stability, playing a decisive role in power quality.

The Northern Power Corporation has recognized this as a technical innovation initiative at the Corporation level and has been applied in 26 provinces and cities in the North. At the 13th Provincial Technical Innovation Contest (2022-2023), this solution won first prize.
