The Premier League has just decided to deduct 10 points from Everton for violating the rules on profit and sustainability of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) law.

The ban comes into effect immediately, meaning Everton have gone from 14 points to just four, dropping five places to 19th in the Premier League table.

The Toffees are also the first Premier League club to be docked points for breaching FFP rules. The club were punished after recording a financial loss of £124.5m in the 2021/22 season.

This figure exceeds the Premier League threshold, which allows a maximum loss of £105m/year.

Everton immediately released a statement revealing their intention to appeal what they considered "unfair". The club's statement:

"Everton Football Club is shocked and disappointed by the Premier League Commission's ruling. We believe the commission has imposed a sporting sanction that is completely disproportionate and unjust.

Everton have communicated their intention to appeal this decision to the Premier League. The process now begins and the Club's case will be considered by the Appeal Panel."

After 12 rounds, coach Sean Dyche's team has 4 wins and 2 draws, earning 14 points. They are now pushed down to 19th place on the rankings, only ahead of newcomer Burnley on goal difference.

Former footballer Jaime Carragher has criticised the Premier League's decision, saying the punishment was "excessive".

"The 10-point deduction for Everton is excessive and wrong. They have been working with the Premier League on these issues for the past few years.

Would it be better to avoid it and try to drag it out like other clubs?"

Everton's punishment has led some to question whether other clubs will receive similar punishments - with Man City being found guilty of 115 breaches of regulations over 14 seasons from 2009/10.
