The European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced on September 7 that the EU is open to Georgia becoming a member.
Mr Borrell said the EU had recognised Georgia’s “European vision” for 2022 but had suspended the country’s application for membership, granting candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, saying Tbilisi needed to make changes first.
Speaking at a press conference, the top EU official said the door was open for Georgia and the EU was committed to supporting Georgia on its path to membership. However, Mr. Borrell also stressed that to achieve candidacy status, serious reforms and adherence to EU values are required, while Georgia “still has a lot of work to do”.
In October, the European Council will assess Georgia’s progress on its reform agenda and consider the next steps in the country’s EU accession process. The EU’s conditions include ending political polarization, improving press freedom and the functioning of the judiciary, and electoral reform. Borrell advised Tbilisi to “use the short time left to meet the demands for important reforms.”
