On February 18, the European Union (EU) and the UK completed negotiations on a new detailed agreement to tackle illegal migration.

It is expected that the two sides will announce details of the new cooperation agreement related to this issue in the coming days.

"The leaders welcomed the successful conclusion of negotiations on a new cooperation agreement between UK agencies and the EU border agency Frontex. This agreement will be formalised in the coming days as part of wider UK-EU cooperation on tackling irregular migration," the UK government said in a statement.

The statement was issued after a phone call between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen. The EU also issued a similar statement on the same day.

Expanded cooperation on illegal migration between the UK and the EU has been in the works for some time, but last October it hit a snag as the UK sought to establish a return agreement for migrants.
