On January 6, the Suzu City Police Department, Ishikawa Prefecture, said they had rescued an elderly woman in her 90s who had been trapped for five days in a house that collapsed due to an earthquake.

Suzu was one of the coastal cities hardest hit by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan on January 1.

Earlier, the Japan Self-Defense Forces said they had used helicopters to safely rescue at least 14 people trapped in the city of Wajima.

According to updated data from local authorities, as of the evening of January 6, 126 people were confirmed dead while more than 200 people were still missing due to the earthquake.

Provincial officials say there are still about 100 locations where people are trapped under collapsed houses.
