Teams that haven't won a match still have hope of qualifying for Euro 2024

According to VnExpress November 23, 2023 15:41

Despite not winning any matches and finishing last in the qualifying round, Estonia still has a ticket to the Euro 2024 play-offs.

Estonia lost seven of their eight qualifying matches, scoring just two goals and conceding 22. But the 118th-ranked team still have hope of reaching the play-offs, having performed well in the Nations League before Euro 2024 qualifying.

In the Nations League, Estonia finished first in Group D in League D - a group for lower-ranked teams like Malta or San Marino.

The Nations League was launched in 2018, with the aim of replacing the traditional friendly match system and becoming a tournament with the reward of play-off places for Euro or World Cup qualifiers.

But the Nations League comes before the qualifying stages. For example, the Euro 2024 qualifiers ran from March 2023 to March 2024, while this season's Nations League runs from June 2022 to June 2023. So the winners of the Nations League then have to play in the Euro qualifiers, and if they don't qualify directly, they'll aim for the play-offs.

According to UEFA regulations, the 12 teams participating in the Euro 2024 play-offs through the Nations League will be selected from Leagues A, B and C. Any team that qualifies directly for Germany will be replaced by the team ranked next to them in the same group in the Nations League.

In the event that fewer than four teams from the same group qualify for the play-offs, the highest-ranked team in League D will be promoted instead. After the Czech Republic beat Moldova 3-0 in the final matchday and secured a direct ticket to Germany, Estonia officially qualified for the play-offs through UEFA's calculation.

The Euro 2024 play-offs will feature 12 teams divided into three groups, each with two semi-finals, before the winner of the final qualifies for Germany. The semi-finals will take place on March 21, with the final five days later.

Estonia's opponent in the semi-finals of the play-offs in Group A is Poland. If they beat Robert Lewandowski and his teammates, Estonia will face the winner of the other semi-final in Group A for a ticket to the Euro 2024 finals.

With the other semi-finalists yet to be decided, Estonia or Poland could face Wales, Finland, Ukraine or Iceland in the final of Bracket A. The play-off draw will take place today, November 23.

As of the draw for the final round in Hamburg, Germany on December 2, 21 teams have already qualified for the final round. They are host Germany and the qualifying teams: Spain and Scotland (Group A), France, Netherlands (Group B), England, Italy (Group C), Turkey, Croatia (Group D), Albania, Czech Republic (Group E), Belgium, Austria (Group F), Hungary, Serbia (Group G), Denmark, Slovenia (Group H), Switzerland, Romania (Group I), Portugal, Slovakia (Group J).

The top seeds in the draw were also confirmed, with Germany, Portugal, France, Belgium, Spain and England.
