At EURO 2024, Portuguese hero Francisco Conceiçao is just one of six players whose fathers played in the continent's most prestigious tournament.

Francisco Conceicao has been talked about a lot after his second-touch goal helped Portugal beat the Czech Republic. 24 years ago, Francisco's father, former player Sergio Conceicao, also shone at the EURO.

The young star of the Dutch national team is not the only "family heir" to participate in the EURO 2024 finals. Up to 6 players participating in this tournament are the sons of former famous players who appeared in the most prestigious European arena at the national team level before.

Francisco Conceicao (Portugal)

Sergio Conceicao is a Portuguese football legend. He shined at EURO 2000 with a hat-trick against Germany. There was a time when coach Humberto Coelho left Luis Figo on the bench to use Sergio Conceicao. That year, Portugal was eliminated by France in the semi-finals.

24 years later, it was Francisco Conceicao's turn to make a memorable debut at the EURO 2024 finals. The 21-year-old winger took just 111 seconds and two touches to score the decisive goal, helping Portugal come back from behind against the Czech Republic.

In the past, Mr. Sergio Conceicao was Francisco's coach at Porto. At the famous Portuguese team, Francisco matured remarkably.

Francisco Conceicao made his national team debut against Slovenia in March 2024. The Porto player has now made three appearances for Portugal.

Ianis Hagi (Romania)

Ianis Hagi is part of the Romanian squad for EURO 2024, coached by Iordanescu Jr. 30 years ago, Ianis' father, Gheorghe Hagi, also played for the Romanian national team. Interestingly, the man who coached Hagi Sr. at that time also had the surname Iordanescu - the father of the current head coach of the Romanian national team.

Gheorghe Hagi was once known as the "Maradona of the Carpathians" after helping the small Romanian team Steaua Bucuresti reach the 1989 Champions League final. For the national team, he played in three EURO tournaments in 1984, 1996 and 2000. His best achievement with the team was reaching the quarter-finals.

In 125 appearances for Romania, Gheorghe Hagi scored 35 goals, assisting Raducioiu's goal against Spain at EURO 1996.

Gheorghe Hagi's son - Ianis - is expected to create a surprise with Romania at this tournament. Ianis Hagi was also considered a promising young talent of European football, and was included in the list of 50 biggest potential stars of the generation born in 1998 by The Guardian (UK).

Marcus Thuram (France)

Marcus Thuram started in the attack for France in their opening match against Austria on June 18. He had previously assisted Kylian Mbappe in the World Cup final in Qatar. However, these are modest achievements compared to what his father did for the national team 20 years ago.

Marcus' father, Lilian Thuram, played for Les Bleus as a defender. Lilian played at four EUROs with France (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008). He was a key member of the 98 World Cup on home soil, and the 2000 EURO. Lilian Thuram held the record for most appearances for the French national team (142) for 14 years. As of September 2022, Hugo Lloris has taken Thuram's place with 145 appearances.

If France win EURO 2024, football history will witness the first father and son to win the tournament together.

Federico Chiesa (Italy)

The Italian press once commented that the scoring instinct runs in the Chiesa family's blood. Federico Chiesa's father, Enrico, scored 220 goals in his career, including 7 goals at the national team level.

Enrico Chiesa played 17 times for the Azzurri, twice at EURO 1996 in England. As soon as he was given the chance, he immediately scored a goal against the Czech team. Four years later, he was called up again but did not play a single minute at EURO 2000.

Enrico's son - striker Federico Chiesa - is the one who continued his father's story with the Italian national team by winning the EURO 2020 championship. Federico played brilliantly in that year's tournament with an important goal in the Semi-finals. Currently, Federico Chiesa has the same number of goals for the national team as his father (7) after 48 appearances.

Daley Blind (Netherlands)

Like Federico Chiesa, Daley Blind also learned from his father - Danny - to become a good player, but in the position of center back. Both father and son Blind played for Ajax, and were both called up to the national team to participate in EURO.

However, Danny Blind's international career was quite bumpy. He received a bitter defeat when coach Rinus Michels removed him from the national team right before EURO 1998. That year, the Netherlands were the European champions.

He was given a chance at the tournament four years later, but did not play a single minute. At EURO 1996, he started until the semi-finals, before the "Orange storm" was eliminated by the French team.

For Daley Blind, EURO 2024 is the second European Championship he has ever participated in. The Girona player will have to wait until the match against France to play the first minutes of this year's tournament. In the opening match, Daley was not put on the field by coach Ronald Koeman.

Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark)

Denmark entered EURO 92 as Yugoslavia’s stand-in. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was on holiday, before rushing to join up with the national team. And the rest is history.

Coach Richard Moller Nielsen's team swept all opponents on the way to the final, before defeating Germany 2-0 to win the championship.

Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel made a number of important saves, including Marco Van Basten's penalty in the semi-finals, helping his team reach the final. In the final, Peter Schmeichel kept a clean sheet against a host of German stars such as Stefan Effenberg and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Peter's son, Kasper Schmeichel, will play his third EURO at the age of 37. He was a key figure in the team at EURO 2012 and especially EURO 2020 - the tournament where Denmark reached the semi-finals. Kasper was also the starting goalkeeper in Leicester City's Premier League title win in 2016.
